Dehradun Police has solved multiple two-wheeler theft cases with the arrest of a notorious vehicle thief and recovered 11 stolen two-wheelers from his possession. According to police, the accused stole vehicles to finance his expensive lifestyle and used a well-planned modus operandi to evade arrest.
The breakthrough came after two separate scooter theft complaints were lodged at Raipur Police Station on July 31, 2026. Complainants Ajay Kumar of Sundarwala, Raipur, and Anil Kumar reported that their scooters—UK07AV-6097 and UP14DJ-3598—had been stolen from different locations in the Raipur area. Based on the complaints, police registered separate cases under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Acting on the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Dehradun, a special police team was formed to investigate the thefts. Investigators examined the crime scenes and analyzed footage from nearly 80 CCTV cameras installed along nearby routes. The CCTV footage helped identify a suspect, and further intelligence gathering led police to track him down.
On August 1, 2026, police arrested Rakesh Dabral (22) near a petrol pump ahead of Maharana Pratap Chowk while he was in possession of one of the stolen scooters. During interrogation, the accused confessed to stealing several other vehicles from different parts of Dehradun.
Based on his disclosure, police recovered 10 additional stolen two-wheelers hidden in a forested area, taking the total recovery to 11 vehicles. Preliminary verification revealed that two of the recovered vehicles had been stolen from the Nehru Colony area and one from Dalanwala, where criminal cases had already been registered. Police are verifying the ownership and case details of the remaining recovered vehicles.
Planned Thefts and Hidden Vehicles
During questioning, the accused told police that he is a native of Pauri Garhwal and currently resides in Kankhal, Haridwar. He admitted that he stole two-wheelers to fund his luxurious lifestyle.
Police said the accused first conducted reconnaissance to identify vehicles parked in isolated locations. After stealing them, he would hide the vehicles in secluded forest areas and return to Haridwar to avoid suspicion. He had allegedly returned to Dehradun to transport the stolen vehicles outside the district for sale when he was arrested.
