Dehradun, August 14, 2026: Arunoday times, The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Friday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the Partition of India in 1947.
Officials and employees of the authority observed two minutes of silence in memory of the victims and paid their respects to those who lost their lives or were displaced during one of the most painful chapters in the country’s history.
Joint Secretary Gaurav Chatwal, along with senior officials and employees of MDDA, attended the programme.
Banshidhar Tiwari Recalls the Painful Chapter of History
MDDA Vice Chairman Banshidhar Tiwari said that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to remember the painful chapter of India’s history that affected the lives of millions of people.
He said that during the Partition in 1947, countless people were forced to leave their homes and land and face displacement. A large number of people lost their lives, while many families suffered the unbearable pain of separation from their loved ones.
Tiwari said the purpose of observing the day is not only to remember the suffering of the past but also to learn from history and strengthen the country’s unity, integrity and social harmony.
He stressed the importance of making younger generations aware of this significant chapter of history so that they understand the value of peace, brotherhood and national unity.
History Should Inspire Social Harmony
MDDA Secretary Mohan Singh Bernia said the day reminds society of the need to learn from history and strengthen the spirit of mutual brotherhood.
He said remembering those who suffered during Partition is a social and national responsibility. The two-minute silence observed at the MDDA office was a tribute to the citizens who lost their lives during the tragedy.
Bernia said the message of the day is to promote peace, unity and harmony and to ensure that the country’s unity and integrity remain the highest priority.
Partition Remembrance Day Observed Across Uttarakhand
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed across the country every year on August 14 following directions from the Central Government.
Various departments and districts across Uttarakhand are also organising programmes to remember those who lost their lives during Partition and to acknowledge the struggles and suffering of displaced families.
The observance aims to strengthen the values of national unity, social harmony and communal brotherhood, while ensuring that future generations remember the lessons of history.
The MDDA programme concluded with officials and employees paying homage to the victims of Partition and reaffirming their commitment to preserving the unity and integrity of the nation.
