In a major initiative to protect the youth from drug abuse, the Dehradun district administration has announced a comprehensive crackdown on narcotics traffickers. Chairing a meeting of the District Level Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD), District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan directed officials to identify drug hotspots through GIS-based crime analysis and launch targeted enforcement operations against drug peddlers.
The District Magistrate said the administration will adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and dismantle the entire drug supply chain. He instructed the Police, STF, ANTF, NCB and the Drug Department to work in close coordination. Special surveillance will also be intensified at medical stores, tobacco kiosks, slum areas and other vulnerable locations.
To strengthen prevention efforts, Dr. Chauhan directed schools, colleges and universities to conduct awareness programmes on anti-drug campaigns, cybercrime and financial crime. He also ordered enhanced CCTV surveillance in hostels, paying guest accommodations and coaching institutes, along with extensive publicity of the Anti-Drug Helpline 1933.
Reviewing the functioning of de-addiction centres, officials informed the meeting that out of 84 registered and two unregistered centres, 23 were found closed, while 15 were found violating prescribed norms. The DM ordered strict action against erring centres and directed the Chief Medical Officer to submit a proposal for establishing a 30-bed de-addiction and rehabilitation centre at Selaqui.
According to the police, 151 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act in 2026 so far, and 170 accused have been arrested and sent to jail. Drug testing of 711 students in higher educational institutions returned negative results in all cases.
Dr. Chauhan said the fight against drugs is not merely a law-and-order issue but a mission to safeguard the future of young people and protect families from the devastating impact of addiction. He reiterated that the administration is committed to breaking every drug network and making Dehradun a drug-free district.
