Padma Awards 2026: President Murmu Honours 131 Distinguished Personalities

India’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Awards, were conferred by President Droupadi Murmu at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. The prestigious event was attended by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several distinguished guests.

Instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards recognise exceptional contributions in fields including art, literature, medicine, sports, science, social work and public affairs. This year, the President approved 131 Padma Awards, comprising 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri honours.
The awards continued the tradition of celebrating both eminent personalities and grassroots changemakers. According to the Centre, the list includes 19 women awardees, six foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI recipients, and 16 posthumous honours. The honours also recognised 45 unsung heroes working in remote and marginalised communities across the country.
Padma Vibhushan Awardees
Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra was conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema spanning more than six decades. Fondly known as Bollywood’s original “He-Man,” Dharmendra acted in over 300 films and remained one of Indian cinema’s most iconic stars. The award was received by actor and MP Hema Malini.
Former Supreme Court judge K. T. Thomas was honoured for his contribution to public affairs and the judiciary. Justice Thomas served in the Supreme Court from 1996 to 2002 and was associated with several landmark judgments.
Renowned violin maestro N. Rajam received the Padma Vibhushan for her immense contribution to Hindustani classical music and for pioneering the Gayaki Ang style on the violin.
Veteran journalist and writer P. Narayanan was recognised for his work in literature and education, particularly through Malayalam journalism and literary translations.
Former Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan was honoured posthumously for his lifelong contribution to public service and politics.
Padma Bhushan Highlights
Celebrated playback singer Alka Yagnik received the Padma Bhushan for her contribution to Indian music. Over a career spanning four decades, she recorded more than 21,000 songs in over 25 languages.
Malayalam cinema superstar Mammootty was honoured for his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema and the arts.
Industrialist and banker Uday Kotak was recognised for his contribution to trade and industry through the growth of Kotak Mahindra Bank into one of India’s leading private banking institutions.
Former tennis star Vijay Amritraj was honoured for his contribution to sports and his representation of India on global platforms.
Other notable recipients included senior BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshyari, oncologist Nori Dattatreyudu, advertising veteran Piyush Pandey, and tribal rights leader Shibu Soren.
Padma Shri Recognises Grassroots Heroes
Among the Padma Shri awardees, Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur and cricketer Rohit Sharma were honoured for their achievements in sports.
A major highlight was the recognition of husband-wife duo Ramchandra Godbole and Suneeta Godbole for their decades-long healthcare and tribal welfare work in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The couple worked extensively in inaccessible and Naxal-affected tribal areas, focusing on healthcare, nutrition, women’s empowerment and education.
Kantha embroidery artist Tripti Mukherjee expressed happiness over the recognition, saying the honour belonged to everyone associated with the traditional art form.
German ethnomusicologist Lars-Christian Koch described the award as a “wonderful surprise” and said Indian music and culture had transformed his life.
Traditional artist Dharmiklal Chunilal Pandya also expressed gratitude after receiving the Padma Shri, saying the honour recognised decades of dedication to preserving Indian traditional art.
The Padma Awards continue to honour individuals whose extraordinary service and achievements have significantly contributed to the nation and society.
