Dehradun: The Dehradun Municipal Corporation has prepared a comprehensive proposal to modernize and redesign the city’s major traffic junctions under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The initiative aims to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and curb vehicular air pollution across the city.
The proposal has been prepared under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey, who directed officials to ensure that the redesign of key intersections follows scientific traffic management standards, providing residents with a safer, smoother, and more efficient transportation system while contributing to improved air quality.
Modern Traffic Infrastructure Planned
According to the proposal, the identified junctions will undergo significant infrastructure upgrades, including improved junction geometry, free left-turn lanes, well-planned lane development, pedestrian-friendly footpaths, zebra crossings, refuge islands, modern traffic signage, thermoplastic road markings, reflective road studs, crash barriers, and other road safety measures.
The plan also includes the installation of smart traffic signals, CCTV surveillance, and AI-based traffic monitoring systems wherever required to enable better traffic management and real-time monitoring.
Focus on Beautification
In addition to improving traffic infrastructure, the project emphasizes the beautification of intersections. Plans include the development of green belts, landscaping, ornamental plantations, aesthetic lighting, public art installations, and cultural elements reflecting Dehradun’s heritage, creating a more attractive and citizen-friendly urban environment.
Improving Safety and Air Quality
Municipal Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that scientifically designed traffic junctions would not only streamline traffic movement but also help reduce road accidents, save travel time, lower fuel consumption, and improve air quality. He added that the proposal aligns with the objectives of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and will contribute to making Dehradun a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable city.
The proposal will now be submitted to the competent authorities for technical and administrative approval. Upon receiving the necessary clearances, the project will be executed within the prescribed standards and timelines.
The review meeting was attended by Regional Transport Officer Dr. Anita Chamola, Circle Officer (Traffic) Jagdish C. Pant, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Tanveer Singh Marwah, PWD Junior Engineer Mushtaq Alam, PWD Junior Engineer Lalit Mohan, and other officials.
